Social Events

We love to show off our inner social butterfly! Show your friend how you whip and nae nae!  School your colleagues in that useless trivia knowledge you’ve acquired in all the free time you have! Or take your kids to a parade or festival for face painting and food!


  • Football
    • Both the New York Jets and the New York Giants play at MetLife Stadium, just a short 20 minute drive down Route 3 from NJMS
  • Soccer
    • Join your fellow soccer enthusiasts right here in Newark to watch the Redbulls play! Celebrate victory in the Ironbound with rodizio and fellow fans
  • Baseball
    • Just a short subway ride away, cheer on the New York Yankees and the New York Mets
  • Basketball
    • Catch the NY Knicks at MSG or make a day of watching the Brooklyn Nets at Barclay’s Center. Enjoy some fine dining, skinny jeans, and elbow patches while you’re there!
  • Hockey
    • Take a leisurely stroll this winter down Market Street to the Prudential Center to watch our vey own NJ Devils crush their competition at The Rock
    • Or keep walking down to Penn Station and hop on the Path train to MSG, where you can watch the New York Rangers in one of the most iconic sporting venues in the nation
    • That other New York team, The Islanders, also call the Barclay’s Center home


  • Festivals
    • The New York and New Jersey area are prime for music festivals each Spring and Summer (and Winter for that matter), just to name a few: Jingle Ball, Warped Tour, Electric Daisy Carnival, Electric Zoo, Central Park Summer Stage, and Governor’s Ball
    • If you’re not musically inclined, and always find yourself hungry, there are plenty of food festivals each summer and fall. Find yourself in Hoboken for the Italian Festival in September, or trek over the NYC for the Feast of San Gennaro
  • Concerts
    • If a full on festival isn’t up your alley, you can spend time on a Friday night at PNC Bank Arts Center checking out their lineup at: http://www.livenation.com/venues/14235/pnc-bank-arts-center
    • Other nearby concert venues include: MSG, Barclay’s Center, Nikon Theatre at Jones Beach and many more

Fun and Games

  • Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (and balloon inflation)
    • Spend the night before Thanksgiving watching the famous Macy’s parade balloons be inflated outside of the Museum of Natural History
    • Hop over to Herald Square to watch Santa roll through before slipping into a tryptophan-induced coma
  • SantaCon
    • Dress up in your finest jolly red suit in December, anywhere in the country! For a list of national SantaCon’s: https://www.santacon.info
  • Times Square NYE
    • Get to the famous Times Square early to brave the cold and crowds to see the stunning ball drop at midnight, and if you’re lucky, kiss your honey under the stars
  • Beer Festivals
  • July 4th Fireworks
    • The famous Macy’s Fireworks display has been ongoing for 40 years, and somehow gets better each time! Whether from the barges in the East River or the Hudson, there are numerous vantage points to get the best view
  • Atlantic City
    • Need I say more? Shopping, gambling, beaches…New Jersey’s own mini Las Vegas!
  • Point Pleasant Boardwalk
    • Because no, Jersey Shore isn’t real life. And because Point Pleasant (exit 98) is only about an hour south of Newark
  • Hoboken’s Pier 13
    • If medicine has you feeling unable to connect with the rest of the “basic” kids in your life, enjoy some food trucks and White Girl Wine @ 13th and Sinatra Drive http://pier13hoboken.com

Family Fun

  • Farmer’s Market at NJMS (or in your community)
    • During the summer, every other Tuesday in the crop circles in front of the medical school, get your locally grown vegetables and flowers
    • Many local towns in the area have weekly markets during the summer months to enjoy
  • Six Flags Great Adventure
  • The Jersey Shore
  • Haunted Houses and Apple Picking
    • During the fall, spend time scaring your kids or friends at Bane Haunted House http://www.banehauntedhouse.com, or if you’re really adventurous, head out to PA for the frightening Eastern State Penitentiary
    • Apple picking and hayrides are a NJ treat! Ort Farms, Demarest Farms and more (and many offer other fruits year round!)
