Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Dr. George F. Heinrich
On October 15, 2025, the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School community gathered to celebrate the life and profound legacy of Dr. George F. Heinrich, the esteemed Associate Dean of the Office of Admissions whose impact continues to shape NJMS and beyond.
The memorial event was a heartfelt tribute that brought together colleagues, students, faculty, alumni, friends, and family to honor Dr. Heinrich’s extraordinary commitment to academic excellence, compassion, and humanism in medicine. The program featured a beautiful string performance and jazz band tribute by the NJMS Vocal Chords, and a musical selection from Dr. Grace S. Ro, a member of the NJMS Class of 2021.
Several distinguished speakers shared remarks, including NJMS Dean Robert L. Johnson — who was also Dr. Heinrich’s classmate at New Jersey Medical School — RWJMS Dean Amy P. Murtha, NJMS Executive Vice Dean Maria L. Soto-Greene, NJMS Chief Operating Officer Michael Petti, NJMS Assistant Dean of Admissions Mercedes Rivero, and a number of faculty, staff, students and alumni.
Throughout the event, it became clear that Dr. Heinrich was much more than a respected leader; he was a warm-hearted gentleman who truly cared about every individual he encountered.
Attendees spoke about Dr. Heinrich’s passion, kindness, and the powerful example he set for humanism in medicine. Many recalled how he not only led with vision but took the time to connect personally, leaving a lasting impact on everyone from students to faculty to staff. His legacy of compassion and leadership is one that will continue to inspire the NJMS community.
Dr. George F. Heinrich’s life serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of empathy, leadership, and genuine care, values that continue to shape the culture and mission throughout Rutgers and beyond.

The George F. Heinrich, MD Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Heinrich.
