This 2-credit course is held in the fall semester. It is open to students in the PhD and Master’s programs. It provides background and specifics of the virus and the epidemic with ample opportunity for review and discussion.
Description
The course covers up-to-date information on the COVID-19 pandemic and its viral cause, SARS-CoV-2. This virus is discussed in the context of coronaviruses in general and the diseases they cause. Vaccines and other control measures are described, together with relevant immunological and epidemiological framework.
Basic and clinical scientists from NJMS and RWJMS present lectures covering topics including:
· Coronavirus biology and the pandemic
· SARS-CoV-2 infection, molecular biology and therapeutics
· Viral transport
· COVID-19 pathobiology and testing
· Epidemiology
· Immunity and vaccines
· SARS-CoV-2 origin, spread and protection
Course details
> Lectures are live in-person and on Zoom
> Timing: Thursdays, 1:30-3:30 pm, Sept. 7 – Dec. 21 (except Thanksgiving)
> Evaluation: 2 multiple-choice exams, in the middle and at the end of the course
> Reviews: 3 Q&A sessions, 1 hour each, including one before each exam
