Human Genetics and Genomics – MSBS 5126Q

Explore the fundamentals of human genetics and genomics. We will begin by examining basic mechanisms of gene expression and inheritance and then study specific genetic diseases and how they are inherited. The composition and arrangement of the human genome and structure and function of human chromosomes will be covered. We also will explore the molecular biology of defective genes and abnormal chromosomes and how they cause disease including cancer. We will examine the future of genetic medicine and how we will predict, diagnose, prevent or cure genetic syndromes in the years to come.  Finally, we will examine the ethics of genetic manipulation and its effects on society.  Ample time will be devoted to discussion and questions so that students should end up with a full understanding of human and medical genetics.
