DENT 5310Q - Oral Immunology Spring 2025

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is geared to provide students with understanding of basic concepts of immunology. The course content will include immunological processes within the periodontium; immunological processes within the crevicular fluid; immunological processes within the saliva; and immunological processes within the endodontium. The course will also cover neoplasia of the oral cavity, dental caries, periodontal disease, as well as immunological mediators of inflammation and pain.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

At the completion of this course students will be able to:

• Define the anatomy and organization of the immune system.
• Describe the cells that comprise the immune system and their major functions.
• Distinguish between innate and adaptive immune responses, and how they intersect.
• Appreciate the strategies employed by the immune system in combating local and systemic host diseases.
• Distinguish between the four types of hypersensitivity reaction.
• Describe the basis of immunologic tolerance and development of autoimmune diseases.
• Describe and distinguish between transplant rejection and graft-versus host disease.
• Define how failure of immune surveillance leads or neoplasia, including oral neoplasia.
• Recognize and describe immunological bases of pathologic conditions in the oral cavity, and how they lead to systemic diseases.
