Gynecologic Cancer
Radiation therapy is commonly used to cure patients with uterine cancer, cervical cancer, and vulvar cancer. It is used less often for ovarian cancer. Depending on the type of cancer and its stage at diagnosis, external beam radiation therapy may be delivered as a daily treatment over 4-7 weeks. Chemotherapy is also sometimes given at the same time as the external beam radiation therapy to make the cancer cells more sensitive to the radiation. Some patients may also be treated using 2-5 brachytherapy procedures, in which a radioactive source is temporarily placed inside, or nearby, a tumor. We work closely with the excellent gynecologic oncology team at the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School to coordinate your care. Many women with gynecologic cancers are relatively young, and we do everything we can to help cure the cancer while preserving quality of life for our patients in their years to come.
