At University Hospital, a variety of treatment options are offered for patients seeking care for scoliosis and scoliosis-related conditions. These include both surgical and nonsurgical techniques provided by experts in neurological surgery and orthopaedics.

Precision is key during back surgery to minimize the potential for serious injury to surrounding nerves. Surgical services at University Hospital are enhanced by the availability of the state-of-the-art Stealth surgical navigation system. This system utilizes sensor-based optical tracking computer technology to accurately pinpoint areas of the spine on a “map” in real time during surgery, giving the surgeon a much more precise view of this critical location.

   

Highly trained orthopaedic surgeons at The University Hospital have extensive experience in correcting LLDs using the full range of techniques including the Ilizarov and Taylor Spatial Frames as well as intramedullary nailing techniques.

This patient is undergoing a forearm lengthening. In order to maintain finger mobility and prevent contractures, customized slings can be suspended off the external fixator.

   
Dr. Francis Patterson ( Professor of Orthopaedic Musculoskeletal Oncology) says that when dealing with a tumor of the musculoskeletal system, the top goals of cutting out the entire tumor and preserving the maximum function become ever more reachable as technology advances. High on his current success list are: a 47-year-old man with a large liposarcoma of the thigh whose surgery preserved near normal motion and strength of the extremity, and who has since become a ski instructor; and a 30-year old woman who had half her pelvis removed, and a composite of allograft and hip replacement used to reconstruct her hip, and is now planning on having a second child.

TOP DOCTORS:
2013 Top Doctors Congratulations to faculty from the NJMS Department of Orthopaedics and other faculty from NJMS on being named to the 2013 Castle Connolly "Top Doctors" list. Based on a peer review survey in which physicians nominate their peers as best doctors, Drs. Joseph Benevenia, Wayne Berberian, Robin Gehrmann, Francis Patterson, Sanjeev Sabharwal and Virak Tan were recognized.

OTHER FACULTY ACHIEVEMENTS:

 

The two main creative areas in Joe Benevenia's life wouldn't seem to have much in common. One is an operating room at University Hospital in Newark. The other is the garage in Montclair that he converted into a sculptor's studio... He is currently working on "The Passage of Hope," a six-piece work commissioned by the Cancer Center for its lobby in Newark.
