EVENING AND WEEKEND CALL
UH has a busy emergency department and radiology residents gain experience interpreting imaging studies on all the varied pathology expected at a major academic institution which is a level 1 trauma and comprehensive stroke center. Residents also learn the imaging manifestations of a spectrum of diseases prevalent in an underserved community such as Newark. The more complicated cases are interpreted by the senior resident on duty allowing the junior to gradually take on more advanced cases as he or she develops proficiency throughout the year. At UH, there is always an attending radiologist on call with the residents during evenings and weekends. Residents will also take shifts at NBI and CBMC.
NIGHT FLOAT
Overnight, the nightfloat resident is the frontline radiologist for every patient in the hospital. It is challenging but a valuable learning opportunity. At UH, an attending radiologist is also on duty with the nightfloat resident at all times. At NBI, there is no attending coverage overnight and residents place preliminary reads.
