Allergy / Immunology Fellowship Program

General:

Allergy and Immunology fellowship training at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School is a 2 year program for physicians who have completed residencies in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, or a combination of the two. There are a total of two fully-funded fellowship positions with training taking place at both University Hospital in Newark, NJ and the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in East Orange, NJ.

Clinical Experience:

The New Jersey Medical School program provides cross training in adult and pediatric allergy & immunology with every fellow attending the Adult and Pediatric Allergy & Immunology clinics at University Hospital. The fellows also spends time at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center which provides exposure to an older population with multiple co-morbid conditions. Each rotation includes exposure to both inpatients and outpatients.

This program offers a diversity of clinical experiences in Allergy & Immunology. University Hospital is a referral center for patients with chronic urticaria, drug allergies, hereditary angioedema, common variable immunodeficiency, mastocytosis, and anaphylaxis. In both our pediatric and adult clinics, fellows also have exposure to other common conditions including rhinitis, asthma, sinusitis, and atopic dermatitis.

Research:

All fellows are required to participate in at least one research project and are encouraged to consider research opportunities in an area of interest to them. Current and past projects have been extremely diverse and while most are clinically oriented, some involve basic science. Fellows often present the results of their research studies at national meetings and the majority of fellows are able to publish at least one manuscript based on their fellowship training. Fellows are encouraged to travel to the national meetings during each of the two training years and may be eligible for financial support for this purpose.

Accreditation:

The Rutgers NJMS Allergy & Immunology Training Program is fully accredited by the ACGME and graduates are eligible to take the certification exam offered by the American Board of Allergy & Immunology.

Success of Training Program Graduates:

During the period from 2011-2016,100% of the graduates from our program passed the American Board of Allergy & Immunology certifying exam with 89% passing on the first attempt. Most graduates are currently in private or group practice settings, however a few have become full or part-time medical school faculty members.

How to Apply:

To be eligible, the applicant must have successfully completed an accredited Pediatrics, Internal Medicine or Med-Peds training program in the United States. Applicants must have United States citizenship or permanent residency status. At present we do not support any visas.

Applications are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) at

Applications are accepted from July 1–31 the year prior to the start of fellowship. Interviews are by invitation only and the interview period is usually September through October the year prior to the start of the program.

We participant in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). The match takes place during the December immediately preceding July start of the program.
