The Cochlear Implant Center of New Jersey provides innovative treatment for children and adults with severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss. Our staff provides expert medical care for those who receive little or no benefit from traditional hearing aids.
A cochlear implant is an electronic device that replaces the function of damaged or missing hair cells in the cochlea through electrical stimulation. It allows users to gain access to conversational speech. Most patients report that the quality of their lives have improved since receiving a cochlear implant. Many can hear the cooing of a baby, rustling of leaves, sounds of music and some can even talk on the telephone.
The Cochlear Implant Center of New Jersey is located in the Audiology Department of the Ambulatory Care Center (ACC), in the heart of University Hospital. A 1,000 car parking garage is located adjacent to the Ambulatory Care Center is available for convenient patient parking.

Meet our Cochlear Implant Team at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School
Robert Jyung, MD. He is the Director of Otology/Neurotology at University Hospital/Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and is certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology. Previously, he was working in Boston, where he was a faculty member at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, a teaching hospital for Harvard Medical School. He received his M.D. from the University of Michigan and did his residency in otolaryngology at Washington University in St. Louis. After completing a two-year fellowship in otology/neurotology at the Mass. Eye and Ear Infirmary, he served as the director of otology/neurotology at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia for four years. He has extensive experience in all aspects of temporal bone surgery, focusing on cochlear implant surgery and chronic ear disease.
Yu-Lan Mary Ying, MD. Dr. Ying completed her undergraduate studies in chemical engineering at MIT before graduating with distinction in research from Stony Brook School of Medicine, which included a year-long Howard Hughes scholarship at the NIH. She then finished her otolaryngology residency at the University of Pittsburgh, followed by a fellowship with the Pittsburgh Ear Associates and then a neurotology fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. She brings a wealth of surgical experience and expertise in vestibular disorders, cholesteatoma, chronic otitis media, facial nerve surgery, otosclerosis and stapedectomy, cochlear implants, Bone-anchored Hearing Aids, glomus tumors, acoustic neuromas and Meniere's disease. She has extensive experience in all aspects of temporal bone surgery, focusing on cochlear implant surgery and chronic ear disease.
Lisa D. Bell, MA,CCC-A. She is the Audiology Director of the Cochlear Implant Center of New Jersey and the Lead Clinical Audiologist at University Hospital.
Nicole Raia, Sc.D., CCC-A, FAAA. She has a stong interest in the diagnosis and management of hearing loss in a vast pediatric population. Her expertise is the diagnosis and management of pediatric hearing loss and she works very closely with all the pediatric cochlear implant patients.
