Clinical Activities During the PhD Phase

  • The Integrated Clinical Experience (ICE): A mandatory component of the MD-PhD program designed to provide students in the final weeks of the PhD phase with clinical experiences before entering clerkship rotations. It is an intensive two-week program that occurs 6-8 weeks prior to the start of the clerkship. Students will attend and participate in attending rounds sessions. Students will see patients in the inpatient or outpatient service, perform physical exams, access labs, and generate a differential diagnosis and a management plan. Students will present assigned patients during attending rounds, followed by a discussion of the case. All activities will be supervised by the team attending and residents.

  • Family Medicine Preceptorship: In an effort to allow students the opportunity to integrate their research experiences with their clinical training and remain connected to current treatments and paradigms of care, NJMS offers students a preceptorship program with the Department of Family Medicine. Within each shift, students have the opportunity to practice their history-taking, physical exam, patient presentation, and note-taking skills as well as experience personalized support and formative feedback from the attending and resident during that time. These slots are offered weekly.
