History and Training Outcomes

The Program operates under the auspices of NJMS and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS). Since its inception in 1994, the NJMS MD-PhD Program has graduated 73 students. There are currently 31 students in the Program. Based on a 2021 survey, the average time to graduation of the NJMS MD-PhD trainees is 7.79 years. Approximately 30% of our graduates went into medicine and pathology, two highly research-oriented specialties. Over 50% of our graduates remain in academia, and an additional 13.5% work in industry. An appraisal of a recent student population under training up until 2022 (n=29) has shown that over 50% of this cohort are interested in pursuing a career in medicine and pediatrics, two disciplines that are traditionally highly supportive of research. Further, 75% of this group express an interest in eventually splitting their professional time between bench research and clinical activity. At the time of the survey in 2022, the cohort under training has published on average 2.4 papers per student.
