Rutgers NJMS pioneers new discoveries in basic, clinical, and translational science. Being part of the highest funded institution in the state of New Jersey, with $184,405,226 of NIH funding alone in 2023, NJMS offers ample opportunity for exploration for future clinician-scientists. There are approximately 497 faculty members to choose from spanning amongst several buildings including the NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center at University Hospital, the International Center for Public Health, and the NJMS Medical Sciences Building. NJMS prides itself particularly on the many centers available for students to work in including the world renowned National Tuberculosis Center, the Center for Emerging Pathogens, Center for Immunity & Inflammation, and the Center for Cell Signaling. NJMS research also has particular areas of excellence such as cardiovascular health, brain injury and stroke, stem cells, and immunology.

Our MD/PhD students research a diverse variety of disciplines ranging from unearthing molecular mechanisms of pathologies and congenital defects to novel methodologies of potential therapeutics and screening modalities; fostering synergy between the bench and the bedside. On average, our students publish 2.4 papers and complete the program within 7.79 years. Furthermore, through a robust network of support, our students have guidance in every step of their training– in choosing a graduate mentor, preparing for their qualifying exam, choosing coursework, balancing clinical experiences, and ultimately defending their thesis.
