Neighborhood
NJMS is located in University Heights, a great neighborhood in Newark. This area is named so because of the number of academic institutions located within its boundaries including Rutgers University (Newark campus), New Jersey Institute of Technology, and Essex County College.
There are several places to eat near campus. Students often go to University Plaza, or Halsey Street for quick bites. The Ironbound, a famous neighborhood in Newark offers an assortment of highly rated restaurants. The area is most known for its authentic Spanish and Portuguese cuisine.
For students living on campus at 180 W Market St, Shoprite is within a walking distance of the apartments. There is also an LA Fitness gym located across the street from University Hospital which most students use. Students often attend activities taking place at the Newark Museum of Art, Prudential Center, and the NJ Performing Arts Center. New York City is also very accessible from Newark, only a short 15-minute train ride from Newark Penn Station. For those with an affinity for the outdoors, the entrance to Branch Brook Park is located right down the street from campus. Branch Brook Park ranges over 360 acres featuring beautiful landscaping. The park is popular for its running and biking paths, roller skating rink, and Cherry Blossom Festival in the spring. The park also has several public sports amenities including a soccer field, baseball field, outdoor basketball courts, tennis courts, and pickleball courts.
One of the fantastic things about our program is the diversity of its surrounding communities. Apart from Newark, students are free to choose to live in any of the surrounding areas which range from quiet suburban neighborhoods to the bustling life of downtown Manhattan. Popular places to live outside of Newark include Jersey City, Hoboken, New York City, Glen Ridge, Montclair, Bloomfield, Nutley, West Orange, and Maplewood. All of these areas are very accessible from Newark.
