Fellowship in Administration, Quality and Leadership

Introduction

The Department of Emergency Medicine at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) is proud to offer this Fellowship in Healthcare Administration, Quality, and Leadership to Emergency Medicine (EM). Rutgers NJMS has an affiliation with University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey. University Hospital is a Level 1 Trauma Center with an Emergency Department volume of over 96,000 visits annually.

The fellowship allows Emergency Physicians to expand their knowledge of Emergency Department Operations, Healthcare Quality, and Patient Safety. Fellows will develop a deeper understanding of the ED revenue cycle and healthcare policy and how EM fits into the current and ever-changing world of healthcare delivery in the United States.

Duties and Responsibilities

Fellows in this program will:

Work clinical shifts as an Attending Physician in the Emergency Department.
Attend all administrative departmental meetings that pertain to ED operations, throughput, quality, and leadership.
Lecture to residents on issues in ED Operations, Quality, and Healthcare policy.
Participate in quality improvement projects involving faculty, residents, medical students, and undergraduate research associates.

Education Experience and Opportunities

The program is available as either a none or two-year experience.
Two-year fellows will have the opportunity to obtain as Master in Healthcare Administration from the Edward J. Bloustein School of Public Policy of Rutgers University.
Fellows have the opportunity to attend key national conferences.
The NJMS Department of Emergency Medicine manages the New Jersey Poison Center as well as a large hospital-based EMS system. This offers fellows exposure to public health and pre-hospital care programs.
Academic medical center and faculty practice offer a robust exposure to population health, value-based payments, and other reform initiatives.

Qualifications

This fellowship will be offered to individuals who meet (or will meet before the start of the fellowship) the following criteria:

Graduate of an ACGME-accrediated 3 or 4-year residence training program in Emergency Medicine
Board eligible/certified in Emergency Medicine
Licensed to practice medicine in the State of New Jersey
