Application Information

Rutgers Health/NJMS participates in the NRMP, and applications for EM-1 positions are only accepted through the AAMC's ERAS service. We currently accept 8 resident per year in a four-year format. Below is some key information to help you apply (adapted from previous years based on current pandemic-related restrictions):

  • USMLE Step 1
    • We do not have an absolute cutoff with regard to USMLE Step 1 scores. However, applicants that have failed Step 1 are unlikely to be successful in our application process.
  • USMLE Step 2
    • Completion of USMLE Step 2 is not required for your application to be considered complete, but we encourage providing as much information as possible so that the residency team has an up-to-date and accurate representation of the applicant.
    • Applicants that have failed Step 2 are unlikely to be successful in our application process.
    • While we strongly encourage osteopathic candidates to submit USMLE scores, applicants with only COMLEX scores will be considered.
  • Foreign Medical Graduates
    • We will consider applications from exceptional foreign medical graduates, but these do require formal US-based clinical experience (not including observerships). We also ask that foreign medical graduates applying to our program recognize the competitiveness of the specialty when attempting to match into EM. We also will on occasion sponsor incoming residents for an appropriate visa per our institutional guidelines.
  • Application Review: Applications are considered complete when the following material is available to us through ERAS
    • A completed ERAS Application
    • Medical Student Performance Evaluations (Dean's Letter)
    • Medical School Transcript
    • Three or four letters of recommendation from clinical academic faculty, including 1 Standardized Letters of Evaluation (SLOEs) from academic EM faculty.
    • USMLE/COMLEX transcripts
    • ECFMG certification (if relevant)
    • Personal statement
  • Timeline: The following is a general timeline to our interview process
    • Application review begins immediately after MSPEs are released by medical schools
    • Week of October 25, 2021: First batch of interview offers sent (additional interview offers will be sent on a rolling basis following this date)
    • Early-November to January: Interviews (weekly on Wednesdays, except on Tuesday, 11/23/21 due to the Thanksgiving holiday)
    • We continue to review applications/updates over the entire interview season and maintain an active waitlist.
    • Due to the high volume of applications we are unable to individually inform candidates if their application is still under review or if we are unable to extend an interview offer.
  • Interview
    • In light of the pandemic all interviews will likely be conducted virtually using Thalamus and/or Zoom. Further details will be available once finalized by AAMC, CORD, etc..
    • Previous years:
      • The interview letter you receive will have information regarding discounted hotel rates in the Newark area.
      • Pre-interview social: Our residents host candidates at a restaurant in the Newark area the evening before the interview day. This is not a mandatory event - while we encourage everyone to attend, we recognize that travel plans during interview season can be tight and inability to attend is not held against you. If you do not hear details about this by a week before your scheduled interview date please contact our Program Coordinator.
      • Interview day: Interviews are conducted at the Rutgers NJMS campus at 185 South Orange Avenue in Newark, NJ (MSB E-609). Approximately 7:45am to 3pm, including attending residency conferences, a tour of the campus, breakfast, lunch and interviews with typically 3 faculty and 1 resident.
      • While we understand that some cancellations are inevitable, we strongly encourage you to cancel your interview with at least 2 weeks notice - this not only gives another candidate the opportunity to fill your slot, but also allows them to make travel plans, etc.
    • Post-Interview
      • We strictly abide by the NRMP rules and will not give you indication before, during or after your interview regarding your potential spot on the rank list. Lack of communication post-interview should not be construed as lack on interest from us, a low position on the rank list or a problem with your application, but is simply us sticking to the rules.

If you have any further questions regarding the application process please feel free to contact us.
