Living in the Area

One of the fantastic things about our program is the diversity of its surrounding communities. Residents are free to choose from any of the surrounding areas which range from quiet suburban neighborhoods to the bustling life of downtown Manhattan. The map above shows the locations of where our residents currently reside.

Some residents choose to live within walking distance of the Hospital. There is apartment style on-campus housing available at 180 W Market Street and Town houses/Condos in Society Hill across the street from the Hospital. Other residents have chosen the Ironbound section of Newark about 10 minute drive from the Hospital.

Approximately 25 minutes by car, Hoboken is most popular amongst our residents. Overlooking the NYC skyline, it provides direct access to NYC and Newark by PATH train, and is a young, vibrant community with exciting nightlife of its own. For more information, click HERE.

Jersey City
Approximately 25 minutes by car, also directly across the Hudson from NYC, Jersey City provides easy access to Manhattan by subway, ferry and car, while in itself an ethnically diverse community with panoramic views and a multitude of dining opportunities.

New York City
Residents have chosen to live in many different parts of NYC, from Manhattan itself to the 5 boroughs. Commute time thus varies tremendously on location and traffic. However, those residents who enjoy city life, there is no better place.

Surrounding Suburbs
Houses and apartments can be found in any number of the area's 22 different municipalities, which run the gamut in terms of housing stock, neighborhood character, and the quality of day-to-day life for their respective residents. The tiny community of Glen Ridge boasts one of the best public school systems in the state. Then there's Montclair, which is a "commuter" community with a vibrant downtown of its own, with an energetic and cultural scene. The town of Essex Fells (not a typo) is also a pretty community in Essex County, and Short Hills is somewhat of a shopping destination, with its namesake, upscale, Short Hills Mall.
