Off-service & Electives
Mandatory “Off-service” rotations are designed to provide the Emergency Medicine resident with the diverse medical education required to function as a well rounded Emergency Physician. These rotations provide clinical knowledge and procedural skills that are best provided by the specialists of the given field. Our focus with regard to off-service rotation is Critical Care with a few others interspersed. Residents spend less than 20% of their residency training on such non-EM-based rotations - however, the entirety of the remaining time is not spent in the ED. Through our department we offer a variety of non-ED clinical experiences such as Addiction Medicine, Observation Medicine, Medical Toxicology, ED Administration & Quality and Medical Education - these experience result in our graduates being prepared not only for core EM, but also being well rounded and exposed to specialty areas of EM that make them more effective practitioners.
Residents additionally have the opportunity to pursue clinical and professional interests during their Elective blocks. While residents may use their elective blocks to complete key activities related to their Scholarly Tracks, they may also rotate on any medical service at University Hospital for their elective. Popular electives include Emergency Ultrasound, Cardiology/Electrophysiology, Sports Medicine and Palliative Medicine. External (non-UH) electives are approved on an individual basis.
