DIVISION OF MATERNAL FETAL MEDICINE

The Maternal Fetal Medicine Division at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School is dedicated to providing state of the art high-risk pregnancy care, education for medical students, residents and fellows, and performing research in the field of obstetrics. We provide clinical care to patients at University Hospital and the University Ob/Gyn Associates practice inthe Ambulatory Care Center in Newark, New Jersey.  The high risk obstetric clinic meets five days a week and provides care for medical complications of pregnancy including hypertensive disorders, diabetes mellitus, thyroid disorders, heart disease, and pregnancy complications including history of prior complicated pregnancies, prior preterm birth, and alloimmunization. A separate prenatal diagnosis clinic meetstwo days a week, supervised by Dr. Joseph Apuzzio who teaches the residents and fellows in diagnostic procedures and specialized sonography.

A separate obstetric and gynecologic sonography unit exists in the same ambulatory care center and is staffed by two sonographers who are supervised by the maternal fetal medicine specialist and performs over 4,500 imaging procedures a year.

Our faculty has a broad range of experience and expertise extending to all aspects of high risk obstetrics, prenatal diagnosis and obstetrical and gynecologic sonography. Our faculty hold leadership positions on national, state and regional committees including the New Jersey Maternal Mortality Committee, Perinatal Quality Collaborative, ACOG national committees and ACOG District III which includes the states of Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and the international section of the Dominican Republic. The knowledge of these highly qualified physicians is a readily available source of information for residents and medical students rotating through the department and for primary care physicians in northern New Jersey.
