Objectives and Requirements

Tutorial Help

Tutorial help is available to any student upon request through the Director of each Clerkship. In conjunction with the daily rounds conducted on each division of the service, students are urged to seek immediate assistance from any member of the attending staff if a problem arises.

Clerkship CD-ROM

At the beginning of the Clerkship, each student receives a Clerkship curriculum CD-ROM. The material included is an Orientation Review, GTA digital manual, and an OSCE review.

Gynecological Teaching Associate (GTA) Program

The Gynecological Teaching Associate (GTA) Program has been in existence for over a decade at NJMS. Lisa Pompeo, MD is the Assistant Course Coordinator and Isle Polonko is the GTA Program Coordinator & OSCE Coordinator.  Approximately 80% of US Medical Schools have Teaching Associate Programs in place.  A Teaching Associate is a person who teaches physical exam techniques using their own body as a teaching tool.  The medical student is taught the proper technique and receives immediate feedback from the GTA.

The Third Year Ob/Gyn student is taught by the GTA at the start of the rotation and evaluated by the GTAs and standardized patients (SPs) at the Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) at the conclusion of the rotation.

The instructional goals of the GTA Program are to:

  • provide a standardized, quality controlled, learning environment for students to learn techniques of breast and pelvic examination
  • provide students with a systematic approach to the breast and pelvic exam
  • improve on transitional skills from one aspect of the exam to another
  • demonstrate a simplified, step-by-step process of how each technique is conducted
  • provide a setting for students to reproduce each technique with GTA direction and feedback
  • provide preventative medicine techniques through patient education segments
  • instruct students on effective patient communication skills

Are you interested in becoming a GTA?  GTAs get paid for training, the hours are flexible, and it's interesting work. Are you interested in including the GTA Program in your Curriculum? The GTA Program has been in the curriculum of Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, and SANE programs. Contact Isle Polonko at 973-972-5546.
