Event Summaries
Interdisciplinary Global Health Lecture
"Cancer Care and Prevention in Africa: Lessons from HIV/AIDS”
The Office of Global Health presents a lecture by Richard Marlink as part of its monthly Interdisciplinary Global Health Lecture Series. Marlink is a medical oncologist, Rutgers’ inaugural Henry Rutgers Professor of Global Health, and the director of Rutgers Global Health Institute. This lecture will be presented both in Newark and live via WebEx.
Marlink has been engaged in global health for his entire career and has made a significant impact in HIV/AIDS clinical care, research, and policy. His involvement with the epidemic began before it was even known as AIDS, while he was a physician intern in New York City, and he helped set up the city of Boston’s first AIDS clinic. Marlink has been working in Botswana, in southern Africa, since 1996, and he was integral in the country’s efforts to scale-up AIDS treatment nationwide.
In his presentation, “Cancer Care and Prevention in Africa: Lessons from HIV/AIDS,” Marlink will discuss the scale-up of national HIV/AIDS programs in Africa and how the same principles can be applied to scaling up national cancer control programs on the continent. He will address the history of the international response to HIV/AIDS in Africa as well as the epidemiologic state of the AIDS epidemic and the past and present global effort to treat and prevent HIV/AIDS. He also will discuss the critical elements of a successful national public health intervention and how to evaluate whether successful programs for comprehensive cancer care and prevention can occur in an African setting.

4th Annual Global Surgery Dinner
"Paths to the Rest of the World: How Physicians Start and Maintain Participation in Healthcare Outside of their Home Practice"
On February 15, 2018 the ISHI NJMS club hosted their annual Global Surgery Dinner. The night included a round table discussion to learn from surgeons involved in Global Health as they shared their experiences with several organizations. The dinner was held at NJMS for our medical school students as well as Rutgers Schools of Health Professions, Rutgers School of Public Health, Rutgers Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and interested faculty members. Overall the night was a great success and we hope to continue this yearly event in the future.
13th Annual Academic Surgical Congress
The Rutgers NJMS Center of Global Surgery was represented at the recent Academic Surgical Congress in Jacksonville, FL on February 1, 2018. The Benjamin F Rush Jr Endowed Global Surgery Fellow, Dr. Peter Johnston MD, presented two abstracts concerning our work in low and middle income countries.
In Sierra Leone, surgically trained community health officers are operating independently at the district hospital level and saving countless lives. The Center for Global Surgery is committed to further studying this task-shifting model as we believe it will be an important interim solution to the enormous, immediate global burden of surgical disease.
In Peru, the unmet burden of surgical disease is often met by international, humanitarian organizations. In collaboration with our partner organization the International Surgical Health Initiative and local colleagues at the Universidad Privada Antenor Orrego and Madre de Cristo Clinic, we are studying the specific burden of disease and barriers to care faced by the sizeable poor population of Trujillo, Peru. We hope this work will lead to better resource allocation toward to the delivery of surgical care in the city.
American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress Meeting
Previous Global Surgery fellow Pete Johnston, was a presenter at ACS clinical congress on October 25, 2017 in San Diego, California.
