Core Surgery Clerkship
Clerkship Structure and Site Information
The surgery clerkship is structured so that you will spend 4 weeks at two different sites (UH, Morristown, Cooperman Barnabas, VA, Jersey City, Newark Beth Israel, Jersey City). The experiences are designed to provide exposure to two different hospital settings with variable operating room, outpatient and inpatient experiences. Specific team assignments for the sites are planned in order to avoid overlap in the clinical experience (i.e. to avoid being assigned to vascular surgery at two different sites). During the rotation, you will have 3 calls scheduled for each 4 week block. We will review the requirements for call during orientation, as it varies amongst sites and teams.
In order to guide you when making your selections, please note the following site abbreviations and team assignments:
Site locations:
Morristown Medical Center (located in Morristown); large community hospital with independent general surgery residency and several teams to rotate on (trauma, general, oncology, etc. – team assignments are made at the site)
East Orange Veteran Association Medical Center (located in East Orange); small community hospital for veterans with Rutgers NJMS general surgery residents, this site is slower paced and has general and vascular surgery experience with ample time dedicated to teaching
