Ben Rush Surgical Society
The Ben Rush Surgical Society is the surgical interest group of NJMS open to medical students interested in general surgery and any of its subspecialties. It is named in honor of Dr. Benjamin F. Rush, Jr., the founding chairman of the Department of Surgery at NJMS. Through close collaboration with the faculty of the Department of Surgery, we are dedicated to helping students explore their interests in surgery via suture and knot-tying workshops, surgical faculty lecture series, shadowing, access to Department of Surgery grand rounds, and research. We are able to reach a wide breadth of students through coordination with other surgical specialty interest groups and community service-oriented groups.
In the 2022-2023 academic year, we have been able to host several clinical skills workshops for our own NJMS students, in addition to collaborating with other programs to teach NJIT students and high school students. We have had the pleasure of hosting various faculty talks, including a recent lecture by our chair of surgery, Dr. Daniel Jones.
Our current initiatives that we are excited to work on include the First Annual Rutgers NJMS Research Symposium, liver transplant shadowing program, and the implementation of ACS/ASE surgical skills curriculum.
