Surgical Oncology at University Hospital – Rutgers New Jersey Medical School

The Division of Surgical Oncology in the Department of Surgery provides a unique service for the state of New Jersey.  As a division, we have established our institution as a place where all complex cases are handled with expertise.  Advanced, recurrent, and widely metastatic malignancies are commonly treated with excellent outcomes.

Surgical Oncology at University Hospital covers malignancy subtypes that are not commonly treated at other hospitals.  We specialize in General Surgical Oncology procedures including head and neck surgery, esophagectomy, gastrectomy, pancreatectomy, hepatectomy, bile duct surgery, colectomy, proctectomy, pelvic exenteration, cytoreduction/hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, and endocrine (thyroid/parathyroid/adrenal) surgery are the mainstay of the program.  We also specialize in breast disease both malignant and benign.  Our entire program is based on multidisciplinary care. Patient coordination is managed via patient navigators with all cases discussed prospectively in tumor boards. 

Minimally invasive techniques including laparoscopy and robotics are frequently used. 

To further benefit our patients, we provide an oncoplastic program to provide surgical reconstruction.  Our relationship with the Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the only NCCN designated center in the state, allows us to provide patients with access to clinical trials and therapies unavailable at most centers.      

We function as a referral center for the entire state for complex cancer procedures in a tertiary/quaternary care.  Our physicians are passionate about cancer care and are always available to assist.
