Surgical Oncology at University Hospital – Rutgers New Jersey Medical School:

The Division of Surgical Oncology in the Department of Surgery at University Hospital provides a unique and comprehensive cancer service for the state of New Jersey. University Hospital is an accredited cancer program, reflecting our commitment to high-quality, multidisciplinary cancer care and comprehensive services for patients with complex and advanced malignancies. As a division, we have established University Hospital as a referral center for complex cases, where challenging malignancies are managed with expertise and comprehensive care. Advanced, recurrent, and widely metastatic malignancies are routinely treated within our program.

Surgical Oncology at University Hospital provides specialized care for malignancies that are not commonly treated at other hospitals. Our program offers a broad range of General Surgical Oncology procedures, including head and neck surgery, esophagectomy, gastrectomy, pancreatectomy, hepatectomy, bile duct surgery, colectomy, proctectomy, pelvic exenteration, cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), and endocrine surgery of the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands.

We also provide comprehensive care for patients with breast disease, including both malignant and benign conditions. Our breast program is an accredited breast program, reflecting our commitment to multidisciplinary, high-quality breast care and comprehensive treatment for patients throughout the region.

Our entire program is based on a multidisciplinary approach. Patient care is coordinated by dedicated patient navigators, and cases are prospectively reviewed at multidisciplinary tumor boards to ensure that each patient receives an individualized treatment plan incorporating surgical, medical, radiation, diagnostic, and supportive care expertise.

Minimally invasive surgical techniques, including advanced laparoscopy and robotic surgery, are frequently utilized when appropriate to provide patients with the benefits of less invasive approaches while maintaining the highest standards of oncologic surgery.

To further benefit our patients, we offer an oncoplastic program that combines cancer surgery with reconstructive techniques to optimize both oncologic and functional outcomes. Our relationship with the Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the only National Cancer Institute–designated comprehensive cancer center in New Jersey, also provides our patients with access to clinical trials, innovative therapies, and specialized treatments that may not be available at other centers.

University Hospital serves as a tertiary and quaternary referral center for complex cancer procedures and advanced malignancies throughout New Jersey and the surrounding region. Our physicians are committed to providing state-of-the-art cancer care and are always available to assist patients and referring physicians with the evaluation and management of complex oncologic cases.
