Application Information

The Psychiatry Residency Training Program at Rutgers, New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) is a full participant in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) of the AAMC. Residency candidates for adult psychiatry must be graduates of an accredited medical school.

Applications for the PGY I positions are accepted from Sep 15th to Nov 15th.

Our program plans to follow recommendations from AAMC and AADPRT and only offer virtual interviews. This recommendation is aligned with our mission of improving equity and reducing costs for applicants. Also, the number of interviews offered in our program are equal to the number of interviewing slots and invited applicants will have 3 business days to respond to our interview invitation without loosing their interview slot.

PGY I Application Requirements

Complete applications must include:

  • The ERAS Common Application Form
  • Personal statement
  • Dean’s letter from your medical school
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Official USMLE transcript or COMLEX scores

International Medical Graduates must also provide their ECFMG certification status.

PGY II Application Requirements

Those applying for the PGY II year must have completed one year of PGY I training from an approved program.  In addition to the application information listed above, applicants will need to provide a letter from the Program Director of the program where the PGY I training was completed.
Applications for PGY II position can be submitted through ERAS or by directly emailing our Program Assistant, Sheila Morris at  morrissr@njms.rutgers.edu.

Interview Process

We begin our residency (virtual) interviews for PGY I positions in November and continue through February. Our usual interview days are Tuesdays.

Please read through our website carefully before submitting your application. We have tried to provide answers to frequently asked questions in our Frequently Asked Questions Section (http://njms.rutgers.edu/departments/psychiatry/faq.cfm )

We receive a large number of applications so we are unable to offer interviews to all applicants and we are not always able to respond directly to applicants.

Once received, your application will be reviewed by the residency selection committee and if selected for interview, you will receive an invitation through email.  The number of interviews offered are equal to the number of slots available. We provide 5 business days for applicants to respond to interview invitations. Our interview day starts at 9 AM and finishes by 2.30 PM.

Thank you for your interest in our program.
