Our Mission

Mission

Our mission is to train our residents to become competent, confident psychiatrists who are ready for the next step in their careers, be it further training via fellowship, an academic appointment, private practice, a position in an organization, or as locum tenens.

In addition, the mission of the New Jersey Medical School is to develop individuals underrepresented in medicine and other health professions, as well as to champion cultural competency, community service, and humanism in all aspects of medical education.

Aims

Our mission requires that we develop well-rounded psychiatrists who have a foundation in the different types of skills needed for different career paths. In addition, residents are provided with the opportunities to develop and hone the specific set of skills that are aligned with their future career goals.

A multi-site experience with exposure to different organizational systems and management styles helps our residents prepare for institutional careers. To help our residents develop organizational skills, we actively involve them in helping our program evolve and improve. To help residents develop skills for an academic career, we provide ample opportunities to not just teach, but teach well, and to publish and present at national conferences. All conference travel where the resident is the first author is sponsored by the institution.

Further, to fulfill the mission of the New Jersey Medical School, we recruit residents from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds and provide strong clinical exposure to a diverse patient population which includes people with a broad range of mental health problems across multiple age, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

We believe in encouraging our residents to reach their full potential not only as clinically excellent psychiatrists but also as teachers, researchers, and leaders.  Our goal is to provide each resident with opportunities to test their skills and aptitudes and to actively guide them as they develop as clinicians, educators, and researchers.  And, we provide ample opportunities to not just teach, but to teach well, and to publish and present at national conferences.
Specifically,

  • We aim to provide a strong clinical and educational foundation in a supportive environment.
  • We aim to produce psychiatrists who are confident of their clinical skills in diverse settings.
  • We aim to produce psychiatrists who are comfortable in their role as educators.
  • We aim to produce psychiatrists who are knowledgeable consumers of research and have experience with their own scholarly work.
  • We aim to produce psychiatrists who are committed to treating the diverse underserved communities of New Jersey.
